The carbon tax, movements in the dollar, interest rate uncertainty and a major share market correction are all playing their part to make life difficult for manufacturers. Of course, plant owners and operators can’t control these issues and must look beyond them to keep costs down and lift productivity.
Here technology must play a critical role, as it always does, not only in improving performance, but also in making the workplace safer. Safety and workplace performance go hand in hand.

Advances in technology can make operations so much easier and safer but managements preoccupied with day-to-day issues can often miss out to their disadvantage.
That is why Sydney Materials Handling and The Safety Show Sydney, held on October 25-27 under one roof, offer a unique opportunity for logistics and materials handling businesses to check out what's new and in the pipeline.
Technology can play a key role in improving safety and workplace performance. It can be the difference between being competitive or not - and that applies to manufacturers trading locally as well as exporters.
But managers, while dealing with day-to-day issues must stay abreast of what's coming on stream.
Tougher exams are just part of the changes to forklift licensing in line with the new Workplace Health & Safety legislation (WHS) due to be implemented nationally on January 1 next year. William Henman of AIMM Industrial Training says all states and territories have been working together to standardize the licensing process.
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland's state manager - workplace health and safety, Jo Kitney, says WHS practitioners who "do their homework and speak the language of business" are more likely to attract funding and resource for occupational health and safety initiatives. CCIQ presented a free seminar at the Queensland Safety Show on June 22 that explained how to find money for WHS from within a business as well as state and federal funding available for WHS. Freelance Robotics will exhibit automated vehicles at the show when it runs from June 21 to 23 at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre and ultimately, says principal William Pagnon, central computers will orchestrate the movements of entire fleets of forklifts.

Practical workplace health and safety answers in the form of products, services and advice drew thousands of visitors to Safety In Action and Melbourne Materials Handling last week. Three acres of safety solutions dealing with challenges as diverse as asbestos, fire-fighting, warehouse storage and even cholesterol were on show at Victoria's largest dedicated OHS event.
Alongside the products and services on offer was a series of seminars for show-goers keen to understand the new workplace health and safety laws due to be adopted from January 1 next year. An estimated 1700 visitors attended the first day's seminars alone, which featured architect of the new laws, Barry Sherriff; the body overseeing their introduction, Safe Work Australia's Julia Collins; and the Australian Industry Group's Carol Bullivant.
